Dear Defender of Life,
We can sit and wait for things to happen, we can complain when they don’t happen the way we want them to, or we can prepare and direct things to try and occur the way that they should. I was in Washington D.C. last week to speak to Florida Congressmen on the 21st, the March for Life on the 22nd, and in Oakland and San Francisco for two West Coast Marches For Life the 23rd & 24th. Here’s just a few of the things that occurred while I was there:
- I spoke to my Congressman, a solid pro-life man, about the problems with HR 36 mainly the rape and incest exceptions and that this bill was terribly flawed. It was a bill rushed through to be passed on the anniversary of Roe v Wade. We all knew President Obama had promised to Veto this bill, and we did not have the votes to override, thus it was a message bill. The problem was that it sent the wrong message – that a certain class of people are not worthy of our protection.
- I roomed with Rebecca Kiessling and Travon Clifton from Save the 1 and helped at their display in the Exhibit hall in the Renaissance. On the 21st everyone was excited about HR 36, but by the 22nd, they were disappointed. Many of the people I talked with did not know that the bill had exceptions and were shocked to find out. Many also were shocked when Rebecca quietly stated: “I feel pain!” Rebecca, who was conceived in rape, puts a face to the theoretical rape exception. Please read about her interview with Cardinal Doan below.
- I then took a red eye to Oakland for Walter Hoye’s March for Life. The people there were all shocked to learn about the exceptions. A no exceptions stance resonates with the black community because they remember when they were the class of people who were determined to be not worthy of protection. Once again, while in San Francisco for the West Coast March for Life, many of the people who were expressing disappointment with HR 36 being withdrawn did not know about the exceptions and were shocked to learn of this. They assumed that after we had elected pro-life congressmen, they would pass strong pro-life bills.
When people realized that the bill had been introduced and fast tracked for a vote without much time to protest, they were extremely dismayed. I noticed many of my Facebook friends did not have full information either. Almost all agreed that if we elected supposedly pro-life legislators who would only pass a bill with exceptions in it, then we elected the wrong legislators!
But, this is not the time to complain about what has happened but to be pro-active in the future. We can change this with positive action. Sign this petition to support HR426, Sanctity of Human Life Act Now! Please read the information below.

News About HR36 and Rape & Incest Exceptions
From Cardinal Timothy Dolan
On the Sirius XM Catholic Channel, Cardinal Dolan, in an interview with Rebecca Kiessling on Jan 21st and in the context of the Pain Capable Bill, called the premise behind the bill “Preposterous!” . . . “Ridiculous”. He opposes the inclusion of rape and incest in a bill: “Every life counts! IF we make an exception for rape and incest, then next year won’t they demand an exception for the Down Syndrome babies . . . Listen to the interview here.
From Abby Johnson
“I am proudly a no-exceptions pro-lifer. But I haven’t always been. Admittedly, I used to accept the rape/incest exception. My opinion began to change as I met people who had been conceived in rape and saw that their lives deserved the same protection as mine. I came to understand that how a child was conceived had no bearing on their humanity.” Read the full article here.
From Gualberto Garcia Jones
The day before the National March for Life, His Eminence, Cardinal Timothy Dolan, in an interview with pro-life speaker, Rebecca Kiessling, called the premise behind the Pain Capable Abortion “Ban” bill “preposterous!” and “ridiculous”. “Does that make it OK,” Cardinal Dolan rhetorically asked during the interview, “to stab someone in the back while sleeping because they can feel NO pain? . . . Ridiculous!” His comments echo the concerns of a vocal group of state and local pro-life organizations who have united to form the Personhood Alliance. Members of the Personhood Alliance and other organizations such as the American Life League, as well as individual pro-life personalities like Abby Johnson, have criticized the deeply flawed Pain Capable Abortion “Ban” legislation. Republican leadership will most certainly bring the flawed HR36 back soon. We have a better and more positive option:
HR 426
The Sanctity of Human Life Act
This bill declares that the right to life guaranteed by the Constitution begins at fertilization, essentially putting an end to abortion. Read a copy of the bill here.
Is this bill constitutional?
YES….click here to read the National Review article about how we can stop abortion through the 14th Amendment.
Can this legislation pass?
The potential for a bill to become a law is often based on surveys or studies of which legislators will vote for it. Many good bills go nowhere because house or senate leadership projects that there are not enough votes. HR426 is a good bill. If legislators don’t want to support it, we should keep bringing it back until they do, and we shouldn’t support the legislators who would vote against life. We should present bills for a cause, not for the voting potential of the legislator.
What should we do about this bill?
- Contact your federal legislators to support HR426. Find your federal representatives contact information here. You can cut and paste the following information, or feel free to create your own:
Introduced on January 21, 2015 by Rep. Jody Hice (R-GA), HR 426, the Sanctity of Human Life Act declares that the right to life guaranteed by the Constitution “for us and our posterity” is vested in each human being at the moment of fertilization. The fact that life begins at fertilization is backed by science, and is further supported by the 14th amendment.
I urge you to support this legislation which affirms that the Congress, each State, the District of Columbia and all United States territories have the authority to protect the lives of all human beings residing in its respective jurisdictions.
This legislation when enacted will ensure that our nation once again becomes a nation with liberty and justice not just for some, but for all.
